Below are shown two unique sets of Palms Silver Strikes from the Gene Trimble estate.
The descriptions below are taken from Gene's notes.
With the exception of the Santa chaser (explanation later), these were the prototypes for the two sets with unpolished (and in some cases razor sharp!) edges.
The strikes were provided with a heavy clear enamel on both sides (which gives the appearance of them being almost 'gold' throughout).
These were the first two sets of strikes delivered with the new capsule type. The Palms chose to have their old machines adapted and new hoppers fitted rather than taking new machines. (My note - I can remember cage manager at the time, Don Hallmark, telling me that as the Palms bought the original machines outright and had several spare machines and parts so they could maintain them in house, it wasn't economic to lease new machines from IGT. Whether that changed later I don't know).
The display area at the top of their old machines would not take the new style capsules, and they didn't want to put the display ones (the prototypes are typically used for this purpose) in old style capsules to confuse people, so the prototype strikes were made with the enamel so they would not tarnish if displayed without protection.
The Santa chaser was a last minute addition, hence the one included here and displayed is a 'regular' issue.
As far as I know these are unique prototype sets - any marks or scratches are on the cases only. Note the Smarty Jones chaser that became a red cap is just in a clear case. The sale proceeds all go to the Gene Trimble estate to cover remaining medical bills not covered by his insurance.
Serious buyers for either or both of these sets should submit offers to me by email (david.spragg@zen.co.uk).
