Unless somebody plated that strike, there is nothing that would flake off. What I have noticed many times is that the high spots on a strike can rub up against the plastic cases and wear the strike. This happens a lot with the Marilyn Monroe MGM strike, also see it a lot on the Planet Hollywood Strike. I wouldn't call it damage, more just a result of being kept in a case.
