I was under the impression that most dealers just sold what they bought to be melted, but I don't know that to be factually correct.

My favorite coin dealer in the Detroit area was robbed a couple years ago and now opens only by appointment. It makes it impossible to just kill time and make casual purchases. My favorite dealer in Florida is going strong, though. I am making more purchases at coin shows, as well as occasional purchases on eBay.
