I did call EBAY and then was transferred to a resolution specialist. Both were friendly and helpful. I was told that the bank account ( from which the PAYPAL payment was linked ) was closed and that PAYPAL itself had filed the claim. The resolution specialist said I should get my money back, which takes at leats five days. Still waiting for refund, but it looks promising. Thanks for all the feedback on the PAYPAL question.
