You found the secret - you need to go where others don't or can't get to. I used to hunt a beach in IL that several of our club members went to frequently. They never found anything and I found lots of rings. Why? Because I was in the deepest water and I also went to an area where boats would park and unload the beachgoers. They would jump in the water and their rings would just fall off.
