High silver prices have led to many silver strikes being sold for silver content to coin dealers by strike collectors and non-strike collectors alike. On occasion a number of better strikes have been sold at melt especially coming from non-collectors.
Two quick tips:
1. Stop by your local coin shop periodly and check availability of strikes including the better ones.
A number of you have been doing this for years. I, personally am not real excited about paying $20 to $22 each for common $10 strikes. This leads me tip number 2.
2. Trade your common strikes for better strikes at your local coin shop and pay the difference in the coin dealers buy/sell price. Average $10 strike by/sell is probably only a couple dollars per strike. The net deal is you are in at your old cost plus $2 and you have more desirable strike.
Obviously it's a limited opportunity but can be fun and on occasion you may get lucky. You might not necessarily walk away with a bunch of rare strikes but certainly ones that are more desirable and ones that enhance your collection in a cost effective way.
