In Response To: Re: $7's weight not Troy ()

The majority of $7 strikes weigh .656 troy ounces. There are some that are up to around .8, but those are rare exceptions. Circus Circus comes to mind with some heavier ones, and I have weighed some Cal ones that were in the .71 range. I would say it's about 90% are .656 and about 10% (or even less) are higher. Walt, are you taking them out of the capsule? If you weighed 20 out of the capsule and they were .81 to .82 then they must all be the same casino (one of the heavier ones) or same very few casinos. There are a number of Colorado $7s that weigh close to the .8 weight.

$10 strike centers weigh either .60 for old strikes or .50 for new strikes the last few years, but not any consistent year for when they changed. I have weighed both versions with the center punched out. With the exception of maybe the Golden Eagle RWM mint strikes, I haven't found any non-Nevada strikes that are lighter than .60, I think because they were already gone from the casinos before they lowered the silver content. I'm surprised there aren't more non-Nevada collectors out there.

Dave.
