When purchasing strikes at flea markets, online, dealer tables, & coin shops. I look very carefully at the conditions that demonstrate the state of polish on the strike face--- if it's displayed out of capsule "warning flags" go off in my head to study it, blow up image "Ebay" and look for signs of finger prints, or fine wiped scratches, acid "spots" caused from washes which leave a "Unnatural haze" on 90% of the items cleaned..... Some listings won't allow you to blow up image--- Skip Em!!!
I am a trained retired (Metallographer / Microscope metal examiner) and still have @20% of my collection that is not in (perfect condition) ie. they have very minor surface issues due to mishandling prior to their "accidental acquisition" by me. ie. came out the machine damaged. Trusted a seller and later see them handling strikes with their bare hands changing to new capsules, it happens.... They are kept until a replacement is found...

Finger prints being acid burned into the finish are not acceptable!
Linear rub marks Not acceptable!
Black oxide Tarnished Not acceptable!
( For the three reasons above I Won't even bid on them) and go to the silver scrap pile if accidentally acquired.

10% to 30% natural haze or tone - Okay to me - Sometimes enhances looks.

Please remember paper towels, cleanex, baush & lomb lens papers, etc are abrasive Cellulose.....
2000 yrs ago gold smiths used "Cotton" softer Cellulose - it's still used today on modern jewelry--- to Buff & clean.
