As a poker player living in Vegas I see first hand what the other casinos having tournaments the same days does for the WSOP and those casinos. I can't imagine the WSOP discouraging other casinos from having tournaments during the same time frame and/or reserving rooms at those casinos.
To me discouraging a casino from having a satellite event that coincides with a major event is more likely to have a negative effect than a positive effect. The Four Queens and Palms will likely have strikes released just prior to and during the CCGTCC show just because they know many strikers will be in Vegas and it will bring strikers to Vegas. This gives the strikers something to do while not at the show and helps keep them here longer which is good for the CCGTCC show.
A strike tounament is not a show it is an event and does not compete with the CCGTCC. As far as sports card I think oversaturation by the card companies hurt that hobby just like it has hurt the commemorative chip hobby. Nothing like obsoletes.
I do agree with you on encouraging people staying at the host casino.
