I make it a personal practice not to open ANY e-mail attachment (especially one that ends with .exe) unless I've requested a file from someone I know... or I know that one is coming... and then I'll usually verify it with the sender before opening.

I use McAfee's Anti-Virus program and am very happy with it. Everyone should have an anti-virus program installed on their PC ... and UPDATE IT AT LEAST WEEKLY.
