Re: Sierra Sid's recent $200.00

Dave is right about the minting of Silver strikes. It is no different then what the US mint does. The more coins/Strikes produced the more wear there is to the dies. This is mainly the reason people pay a premium for First day of Issue/Early Stuck coins from the US Mint or grading companies.

As the coins are stamped out the dies wear and the frosting became less appearant. I seen quite a bit of this of the Regency Sands "Summer Pool Party" strikes. I have some with brilliant frosting and some with almost a completely shiney surface.

I can't imagine that the mints that produce Silver Strikes, especially $200s since they are low mintage, would take the time to rework or recondition the dies for a 50-100 strikes run. Like Dave mentioned, this requires them to stop production, pull the dies and rework the areas by either polishing or acid treating the frosted areas.

What does amaze me with Silver Strikes is I have never seem any with what they call die cracks on them or any with doubling on the letters. This is caused from the dies they use to actually cracks and leaves the crack impression on the surface of the Strike. With the doubling of the letters, it is usually caused by the dies coming loose and restriking the surface. This leads me to believe that the quality control on SS is far better then our US mints.

As for the Sierra Sids $200 gun collection strikes. My wife and I got two of them last October. The lady at the cage told us there was only 3 in the safe and one that was returned without a box. Becky I think this must have been the one you got. The two in the safe must have been some of the first struck. The frosting is prefect on them and the shiney surfaces clean and bright.

As Dave says thou, it makes little sense that the last ones in the safe were the first ones produced. As they are struck they are put into the shipping containers. First ones on the bottom of the containers should be the last ones out and first to go. The only way I could explain them being on the bottom is if they opened the box upside down. Putting the first struck Strikes on the bottom. Reguardless, the two I have are spectacular and were on the bottom of the pile.
