Not sure about that $20 tip working, not all front desk people even have authority to upgrade...maybe that was posted by a front desk clerk...lol.
As far as the host, the hosts I have had do not accept tips, but what we always do is bring a little gift, coffee, chocolates, something like that. It's always a good idea to keep your host happy!
