Jim - My thoughts are the one you say hasa crack isn't a crack because in looking at it the line doesn't go all the way to the outer edge and there seems to be a dot on the line, I belive this was something that was on the die (like a piece of wire or thread )and was transfered to the strike when it was struck, as far as the one on the right it appears that the die had grease or something else on it during the striking. This is seen on coins also. If it was grease then others might not have the same problem if the die was cleaned or the grease or other matter wore off.
