I've been told by a casino exective some time ago that the demise of the older silver strike machines in Atlantic City several years was several-fold.
1. High maintenance/service costs on frequent re-fills (machines only held 50 strikes) and out-of-service mechanism jams requiring abnormal frequency of service attention by slot technicians.
2. Low return on investment. Other types of slots outperformed on revenue generated for the same amount of space occupied on the casino floor.
3. Changeover to TITO.
4. Increased cost of silver and what IGT charged casinos for individual strikes.
5. Collector pressure on cage personal to swap duplicates and returning strikes with defective caps in order to obtain newer un-damaged caps.
