The moon disappeared due to die polishing by the maker. There was some sort of die problem, so it was removed, and polished to remove any problems from the die, but by doing so the moon was mostly removed in the process. Same thing happened to the 1937 3 legged buffalo nickel.Not due to die wear, or oil on the die.
