This seems to be an older thread and I just started reading this forum. I have taken a more serious interest in Silver Strikes so thought I would come here to brush up a little.
For those who read Chipboard also, you might have noticed a post that I just made there. I will pose the general thoughts here if nobody has seen it. This topic seems to be touching on the subject that I was addressing.
Regarding the colored capsuls, I don't see the real point myself. That is just my feeling though. From the ones that I have seen, they seem to detract from the whole cheracter of the Silver Strikes with the gold rings and silver centers. I just see them as a gimmick and can see how it will add some confusion to the casual collector. There will be people who will get the colored capsuls, or dye others as has been mentioned, and put old tokens into the capsuls claiming that they are rare or something. What is the possibility also that when a buyer gets the token they open the colored capsul and find the token to be a darkened tarnished less desirable specimen. I would think that selling and displaying old tokens in these colored capsuls might actually help hide the true quality of the token inside.
That is just my thought and concern though.
As for the original questions and posts on the other site, ever since my original RIO and other tokens started to darken in their original capsuls, I attempted to seek out a solution. The problem, as I saw it, was the hole in the original capsul that allowed air in to oxidize the gold ring. Obviously Bronze or Brass and not gold. Since then I have taken every Silver Strike that I ever got home and put it in an AirTite with the foam rings. I think X-43 as JPs Corner calls them. Since doing that they seem to keep more of their original appearance and have darkened at a significantly lower rate.
Also, My early experiences were that when a token fell into the tray, they would often chip, scratch or crack. I have had a couple actually break apart in the tray on me. That and with the new capsuls that I got this year, I found that every one, 2 from Orleans, 2 from Palms and 3 from Gold Coast, were all horribly scratched and scuffed. Thus another reason, I have felt to put them in new capsuls.
So my question now to those of you who are more serious and experienced. Is it best, when one goes to sell their silver strikes, to put them back in their original capsule? Do I do future damage to the value by putting them all into AirTites?
Thanks for your attention and replies.
