There may be future problems for strike collectors sending and receiving strikes through the USPS due to mail irradiation. Some slabbed silver coins sent through the Hamilton Township, NJ were irradiated for anthrax and were received heavily toned and the plastic melted to one of the coins. This is from a recent article in coin world (see website: http://12.104.174.24/news/030402/news-1.asp).
These problems may have only been caused because of the coins close proximity to plastic but who doesn't send strikes in capsules?
Will this force all silver strikes, tokens, coins to be sent via UPS at their 1 lb minimum shipping rate? I hope not but according to the article, 260 electron-beam irradiation devices are planned to be installed at major processing and distribution facilities.
