cheap!
Tokeneer,
I do not, even for a second, think that SS'ers are cheap. I only see that their casino collecting interest is a different specialty. Just as there are chip collectors who prefer older Las Vegas, or Northern Nevada, or Riverboats, or inlay (no hot-stamps please) only, they are just another part of what I consider the wide range of casino memorabilia collectors. Within which there are probably an equal number of cheap and generous members.
Bearing in mind that collecting is still new to me, and most of my experiences have centered on chips, and I have not 'specialized' except to say that I prefer casino-related memorabilia to anything else. (This is true because I do not collect anything else.) So far that experience has lead to me to quite a few wonderful people (and a couple of "needs improvement" projects). And as far as being cheap, it absolutely amazes me how many of these people are far from cheap. In fact, the very few high-end chips in my collection are there only because they were gifted to me from various, very generous collectors.
My collection includes a Floridian 50, and not because I could afford to buy one. My collection has a set of the 1st issue People's Choice $1, $5 and $25 chips, and not because I could afford to buy them. I have the two piece, only issue set ($1 and $5) from the Great Basin (NV), and again, not because I could afford to buy them. I recall finding a Joby's Monte Carlo $5 for a very good deal (from an antique dealer) and in my excitement I was gifted a companion piece from Joby's by a chip collector, and once again it was something beyond my financial reach.
My point here it that there are many, many generous people in this larger community of ours. And just because one collects Silver Strikes, versus chips or tokens or cards keys or decks of cards, or dice or swizzle sticks, etc., no one group has a lock on being cheap, nor a lock on being generous. The message that I posted here appears equally on the CC>CC BB, Greg Susong's BB and just about anywhere else I can put it.
I know that the Club does not have to solicit donations to put this Collection together. But we believe the Collection will be better for it. And the fact of the matter is, is that we wanted to have members participate in putting it together for the sake of their own pride. We wanted to be able to have all of us say, look what we did. And in the end, we want to make the finished product available to the members, for them to use it to promote our interest in collecting, especially to potential new collectors.
I know this got long winded, but just be glad you didn't get me going about patriotism or the Flag.
Thank you for your reply, and we are still looking for a few good Strikes!
Jim Follis, a collector
