I'm not an expert but I think I'd like a crack at this. Probably, most people reading your post are going to try to relate the two types you have.
I think you have two entirely different animals there. While it's generally accepted that strikes start out frosted, then slowly turn "shiny", the fact that the frosted one is a small dot, means that, if anything, the die will clog up and turn into the "no dot" issue. It would be pretty difficult for the die to "wear" into a large dot variety.
Normally, I would believe that the large dot would get progressively smaller, but then it wouldn't turn frosted.
I guess it'll take some of the guys, who actually possess the different varieties, to give us a better understanding of what you have there.
