Re: Cleaning a Strike

Hi Ron, I have had good success dipping the strikes in E-Z-EST Coin Cleaner. You can get it at most Coin Shops. It comes in a 5oz. jar and runs $3.00 to $4.00. I use medical stainless steel hemostats to grip the strike on the edge ever so lightly so as not to damage the strike and dip for 10 seconds. If not completely cleaned I dip for another 10 seconds up to a "max" of about 30 to 40 seconds. This method will clean "most" silver strikes except for the real "dirty" strikes. I have also used a dremel tool with very smooth polishing wheel and super-fine polishing grit on the "hard" ones but you had better know what you are doing with this method! As a former Gunsmith I have a lot of experience polishing gun parts using this method so it has worked out ok for me but it is at best a "very tricky" procedure as you can scratch the strike real easy if not done right. Hope this info helps you and others out in this endeavor...........Dick Maheu in New Mexico
