Walter; There is a top die and a bottom die. Both dies are indepently mounted in the coining press with a .999 fine silver planchet inserted between the two dies which is simultaneously struck on both sides in the same single operation. One die can be loose, the other may not be. Again, I'm not saying this is the answer to Ric Culver's question, but it is a possibility.
