I agree Dennis. Grease on the die is called a "filled die" in coin collecting circles. Keeping in mind, that everything raised in relief on the surface of a coin or token is recessed or incused on the die. If grease fills in the incused area on the die where a letter should appear, and the grease is not removed prior to striking, will result in what your image shows.
